Thursday’s Ruby Payne Presentation Was an Eye Opener (8/30/2013)

Ruby’s presentation to public health, social service, Head Start, and correctional professionals, among others, about the lives of individuals in poverty in the U.S. was well received. The article shares some background on Ms. Payne’s life and some statistics on poverty that she shared in her presentation. Payne was exposed to poverty as a child, growing up in the South and the Midwest, and then spent three months studying poverty in Haiti. But America was the focus of her presentation. She discussed how growing up in poverty affects the way people think, and “She added that 67 percent of American people in poverty are white, which opened the eyes of most in the audience.” She also compared how children from different social classes hear different numbers of words spoken at home.
