Baeley Sitting Up is seven years old and is entering the second grade. Due to tribal regulations, Baeley started kindergarten mid-year, and she worked hard during her first-grade year to catch up with her peers at Crazy Horse School on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

Today, Baeley reads words such as mercury, rotation, and thousand. How did this happen?

First of all, Baeley has a great support system in her community, and she has loving and supportive parents. In addition, Baeley learned to use Tucker Signing Strategies for Reading to decode unfamiliar words. Thanks to an AmeriCorps grant awarded to Families Working Together in Wanblee, South Dakota, Baeley’s progress will be supported with Tucker Signing Strategies for two more years, and she has a great chance of reading above grade level by the end of third grade. Way to go, Baeley!

Tucker Signing Strategies for Reading is a powerful supplemental strategy of 44 hand signs for decoding. It works fast with students because you see it, sign it, and say it! Next thing you know, you’re reading!
