Getting Ahead in Howard County, Maryland, has come a long way since graduating its first Getting Ahead group last year. The Howard County Board to Promote Self-Sufficiency’s initiative has been especially focused on “Staying Ahead,” a network of resources and supports that remain available to Getting Ahead graduates after they’ve completed the Getting Ahead series of meetings.

According to the organization, the Staying Ahead podcast fits neatly with that network of continuing support: “The goal of the Staying Ahead podcast is to inform, uplift, and enlighten graduates of our Getting Ahead initiative, as well as the community. In the process we hope to encourage businesses and community organizations to partner in ways that will help us improve our well-being and increase self-sufficiency for all.”

The podcast is produced in partnership with Howard Community College. Getting Ahead Howard County was able to enlist Dragon Digital Media, the television and radio production facility at the community college, for help in producing and broadcasting the monthly podcast. This could be a great model for other initiatives looking for ways to connect with the higher education sector in their communities.
