Southeast Iowa Building Bridges Initiative on Tri-States Public Radio

June 26, 2017 Published by

Listen to a great profile of the work Vern Reed and others are doing to spread Bridges constructs throughout southeast Iowa. In the interview, Reed highlights the need to develop a range of resources, not just financial resources. Physical health and mobility, motivation and persistence, and integrity and trust are just a few of the other resources that are the focus of the Bridges work.

Another goal of the initiative is to train as many people as possible in the Bridges constructs. In the past year and a half, more than 2,000 people in southeast Iowa have participated in a Bridges training. This kind of widespread buy-in provides a shared vocabulary that lays the groundwork for an effective movement.

“‘It offers a community not only tools but a different way to look at poverty,’ said Reed. ‘A way that takes away judgment, a way that encourages us to work together, a way that says let’s quit trying to fix people because that never works.’”
