Ellis Medical, Schenectady, New York, uses Bridges constructs to make significant changes in approaches to serving low-income patients. Results:

  • Ellis improved standing in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation ranking of healthiest counties in New York for three consecutive years.
  • The percentage of uninsured patients treated at Ellis Health Center Emergency Department declined from 20% to 18% as the hospital enrolled more patients in Medicaid.
  • The patient volume at Ellis primary care clinics increased 25% over two years as more patients visited the clinics rather than the Emergency Department.
  • More than 340 people without primary care physicians established care at the Ellis Family Health Center.

Kent State University – Salem and aha! Process worked together to train 90 licensed practical nursing (LPN) students in Columbiana and Trumbull counties, Ohio, in Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-By World. The goal was to meet the increasing demand for nurses by improving retention rates in LPN programs, particularly among disadvantaged adults. Results:

  • 58 participants reported that they would increase their personal resources.
  • Another 21 participants stated that the skills they learned would help them retain their current jobs.
  • One respondent reported that she “gained more money and responsibilities at my job because my supervisor felt she could trust in me and truly rely on me.”
  • Another respondent reported that she “learned language skills for interviews.”
  • A third respondent said the training helped her to “improve on certain areas of relationships, both personal and professional.”

Humility of Mary Health Partners, Youngstown, Ohio, used Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-By World with front-line employees to help them transition to new work groups with new rules and expectations. They wanted to provide employees with the knowledge and principles they would need to navigate their new environment. After training six cohorts, Kristina Miller, workforce development coordinator, reports that participants have set goals for themselves, designed pathways to meet their goals, and have become a support system for one another. Participants’ comments demonstrate the life-altering impact of the Getting Ahead class.
