Ruby Payne Book Helps DC Families Out Of Poverty

Faith congregations all around Washington, DC are helping individual families pave paths out of poverty, with the help of Ruby Payne’s ideas and training. Using her book “A Framework For Understanding Poverty,” city officials are training churches, synagogues, and mosques on the hidden rules of social class so that they might better help families in need. The nation’s capital was inspired by an initiative in Denver, CO where each faith congregation chose one family to assist. So far, congregations around DC have chosen two hundred families whom they will help out of poverty. The person in charge of training these congregations said, “You can talk to a family all you want and try to help them. But so long as they’re living out of a car, talking about a résumé won’t help.”
