YWCA of St. Joseph County, Indiana, offered Getting Ahead to clients. The purpose is to break the cycle of clients moving from one social service agency to another but remaining “stuck” in their lives. Fifty-eight people participated in the initial program in 2006. They were tracked through two six-month periods, or “quarters.” Respondents to a survey showed significant gains in the areas of income, education, employment, and support systems from Quarter 1 to Quarter 2. Results:
- Percent reporting positive change in income rose from 26% to 84%.
- Percent reporting attainment of educational goals rose from 36% to 69%.
- Percent reporting a positive change in employment status rose from 32% to 63%.
- Percent reporting a positive change in support systems rose from 13% to 84%.
