The third of a series of four articles, in podcast form, that address poverty is titled “Working with Students from Poverty: Discipline.” This article, written by Ruby Payne, founder and president of aha! Process, discusses how many people in poverty approach the notion of discipline differently than those not in poverty. In poverty, discipline is often about penance and forgiveness, but discipline can also be instructive and has the power to change behavior. Although the articles in this podcast series were originally written for teachers, they may be helpful to those who are transitioning from being on welfare to joining the workforce.
