In some of our rural communities, because of the natural resources, we’ve seen a lot of resource extraction. But with the change of our economy, that has become less of a mainstay as far as an economic feeder. Lumber, agriculture is still very big in some rural communities, but some of our natural resources have been either depleted or there’s been a shift away from them.
There can be a structural bias politically. There’s not many people in some rural communities, and so making sure that, from a political standpoint, the voice of rural is heard is important, because being able to serve more people is sometimes seen as a benefit.
And then often we have hopelessness and lack of identity. I’ve noticed over the many years I’ve been doing this work that the nature of rural is changing due to people moving frequently. There are more people moving…
