Dr. Dee Acklie spent her sabbatical teaching fifth grade on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in Wanblee, South Dakota, where the average annual income is $6,000. Hunger and lack of resources, along with hope, prevail in many ways in this area of the country. This presentation outlines her application of the hidden rules of class, challenges faced in the classroom, and her personal journey while living on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
