The Bridges Out of Poverty community in West Burlington, Iowa, is strong. In the fall two teachers at West Burlington High School will bring Investigations into Economic Class in America to high school juniors as a night offering. Students who enroll will receive elective credit.
The course, to be co-facilitated by Vern and Cindee Reed, will last two semesters. The fall semester will focus on the Investigations curriculum, and the spring semester will cover a developmental English curriculum based on the requirements of local Southeastern Community College.
Taking a cue from the Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-By World model, the teachers are considering offering the students in the class the same $25 stipend that adults in Getting Ahead typically receive. According to West Burlington Superintendent David Schnitt, though, students could receive either the stipend or the elective credit, but not both.
