Big things have been happening in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The Bucks County Opportunity Council (BCOC) has been connecting people with resources in exciting ways that have gained recognition from local government.
The Board of County Commissioners of Bucks County issued an official proclamation on May 17, 2017, that May would henceforth be designated Community Action Month throughout the county of Bucks. The proclamation explicitly acknowledges the contributions of the BCOC.
Fresh Connect Bucks County has registered more than 500 households to receive fresh fruits and vegetables! In pouring rain and under the hot sun, people come out to obtain nutritious produce to feed their families. In its first week in Ottsville, Fresh Connect fed 48 families, and they are seeing close to 200 families each week in Bristol. View a video about Fresh Connect.
BCOC also offers the Economic Self-Sufficiency Program, which empowers low-income families with the education, skills, and resources necessary to achieve and maintain economic self-sufficiency without any future need for cash welfare subsidies. Families starting the program had an average income of $8,952, an amount that increased by nearly $40,000 to $48,280 upon graduation from the program.
The 21st group to graduate from the Economic Self-Sufficiency Program will celebrate in a ceremony on September 13, 2017. With results like these, it’s no wonder BCOC has had an impact that extends from individuals, to the community, all the way to the policy level.
