Classes Offer Citizens “Bridges Out of Poverty” (02/14/2013)

A Getting Ahead graduate Lynn Phillips-Gaines addressed a group of community leaders in hopes of getting the classes offered in the West Point, Mississippi, where industry closure has left many residents without work. Seeing the good work that Bridges Out of Poverty did in nearby Starkville, the event attracted many West Point/Clay County residents looking to bring Bridges to town. “Once a community gets beyond 41 percent generational poverty, it’s almost impossible to bring that community back,” Phillips-Gaines said. “It only takes two generations to go from situational poverty to generational poverty.” A Bridges program in West Point would provide hope of escaping the community’s long rut of poverty.
