The highest unemployment rate in the country was what distinguished Elkhart County, Indiana, in 2009. When President Obama held a town hall meeting at a local high school there, the employment rate was nearly 20%.

That rate is way down these days, and Elkhart County has the lowest unemployment rate of any county in the state. But moving from widespread crisis to “just getting by” wasn’t enough.

As part of its mission to inspire good and impact success, the Community Foundation of Elkhart County invited Ruby Payne to present an overview of Bridges Out of Poverty. The event was free and open to the public, and the foundation gave away free copies of Bridges to the first 100 registrants. The foundation also supports the community via grants and scholarships for nonprofits and students.
