Ruby Payne always wanted to be a teacher. Her favorite pretend was that her dolls were the children in her classroom. As the oldest of six children, she insisted that her siblings play school with her and she was the teacher. Can you see this picture as Ruby describes it?

“A worse behaved class you could not have had. If they got mad or did not like the lesson, they just left. They fought with each other, disobeyed the teacher, talked back to the teacher, tattled on the teacher to the principal (my mother), and in general were unruly, disobedient and rude. I learned early on that if you wanted to keep them with you, you needed to be interesting and tell stories.”
